I know that Drudge is an asshole who blows things like this (and the bow to the Emperor of Japan) way out of proportion, and I know that President Obama is a very respectful and laid-back guy, but I’m kind of a traditionalist when it comes to protocol like this and I just don’t think the President of the United States should ever bow to anyone.
It’s probably a polite gesture, an automatic reflex that Obama has done for years when meeting people, but if the President can be trained to understand how to use the nuclear launch codes, a protocol officer can certainly train him to never bow to anyone.
I’m sure a lot of people will disagree with me about this. This isn’t a Democrat/Republican thing; I’m a Democrat and I love Barack Obama, but it’s just not Presidential. The President shouldn’t bow to the Mayor of Tampa and while I can almost understand what happened with Akihito, I don’t think the President should have bowed to the Emperor of Japan.
What do you think? Am I being irrational?
You know this whole culture of tearing people down and attack politics? We’re contributing to it, too. Yeah, Rep. Joe Wilson is a dick. We get it. He shouldn’t have heckled the President during a Joint Congressional address. Everyone agrees. Even his fellow Republicans called him an asshole for it.
Here’s the thing: he apologized. Immediately. And the President? He accepted the apology. “Unequivocally” is the term that I believe was used.
So, how about we move on from it and focus on what’s important, okay? Because, right now, we’re being the assholes. We keep pouring fuel on the fire. This is like middle school. It’s like Person A said something about Person B and then apologized, but Person B’s friends keep saying, “Dude, you’re not gonna let him get away with that, are you?”. Even though Person A’s apology was sufficient, Person B’s friends are acting like assholes and it’s just going to result in something that could have been avoided.
Also, I said last time I brought this subject up that I’m embarrassed FOR my country. Let me edit that: I’m embarrassed OF my country.
The White House website sucks. It’s sucked since January when the Obama Administration took over. I gave them the benefit of the doubt because of the excitement and confusion that comes along with the transition between one administration and the other, but I was trying to find something on there a few minutes ago and it still sucks.
I hate to say this, but you have to give credit where it is due: one thing that President Bush did correctly was have a website that was easy to navigate and constantly, instantly updated. President Obama’s website looks great, but the administration should be updating it as soon as something happens and do a much better job of getting photos up on the site.
It surprises me that the President’s web people are dropping the ball with the White House website because, during the campaign, BarackObama.com was a major force behind everything we did and was a fantastic site, full of resources, news and information. Hopefully they will start focusing less on how the site looks and more on the quality and availability of the content.
The New York Times website has a story up tonight about President Obama’s heavy usage of a teleprompter — a story that was covered first, and better, by Politico (and newspapers wonder why they are dying) — and included a few critical quotes from one of President George W. Bush’s former aides, Bradley Blakeman, that leaves me wondering what the negatives are to his criticisms.
Blakeman says that Obama is “extremely scripted”, “cautious to the max”, and afraid of misspeaking. Okay…and the problem? Well, Blakeman says that the President also has the annoying habit of taking “a lot of time to think about what he’s going to say.”
Ahh…that clears things up. See, it’s better for the President of the United States to shoot from the hip, to say things like “bring ‘em on”, or maybe even declare “mission accomplished”, right? I kind of LIKE having a cautious, thoughtful President. It’s a nice change of pace. Maybe, someday, I’ll join Mr. Blakeman and decide that Yosemite Sam is a better fit in the Oval Office, but until then, I’ll go with the guy using a teleprompter and not saying enough dumb things to have your name attached to a word that means “dumb or nonsensical things that someone says”.
Nice. It’s about damn time that we started pushing for real progress on high-speed rail, especially here on the West Coast.
I don’t know if I’m more excited to see the words “President Obama” or “former President Bush”.
This is a shining example of why I say that LBJ is the most underrated President in American History. If something needed to be done, President Johnson got it done.
